I strongly recomend this product it makes taking the door panel much easier and you won't scratch anything. 11Pc Auto Trim Door Panel Window Molding Upholstery Clip Removal Tool Kit Is only 20 bucks but you can use it for unclipping and working in any door panel without scratching it. I have my set.
Here is the procedure on how to change it.
First off you need to pull the tweeter speaker: Just grab it and pull the top, then pull the front upwards to undo the clip then sllide it forward. If you pull the top and look with a flash light you'll see what I'm talking about.
Now you need to pull this plastic cover in your door handle.
With the cover off, you need to remove these three screws. The one on the right of the pic needs a bigger screwdriver.
The door panel has a grand total of five screws as seen in the pic below (the first three you should already have removed in the previous step). The screw at the handle has a little cover. I recommend removing this cover with a razor blade.
With all five screws neatly removed (I hope you are making note of where they go!) you can pull the door panel. Start at the bottom and work your way to the top. Then pull up on the door panel because at the top it attaches with some pain in the behind clips. With the door panel detached, you have to undo the three connectors for the window switch, the connector for the courtesy light and the cable for the door handle (should just pull out.)
Now you have to remove the speaker, just undo the connector and remove the four screws. This is when we figure what is going on.
Three possible scenarios.
- The window retaining clips broke. This is what happened to this car. Here is a pic of the stupid window retaining clips. So peak through the hole for the speaker and try to see the bottom of the glass to see if this is what happened. If everything seems attached then this is not your problem. If this is your problem then you need to fish the glass out. This is hard and a pain I know but dont worry so much about scratching the glass because... (as of today)... you have to replace the whole glass. Dumb Land Rover won't sell you the clips separately. With the glass out just continue the steps.
- The second possibility is that your regulator broke, in which the retaining clips are still attached but the cables or something else gave out. A bad regulator usually comes with lots of pieces at the bottom of the door assembly.
- Thirds scenario is that your motor is bad, in which case you need a new regulator assembly because the motor comes with the regulator.
Now with the glass removed remove the four bolts and two nuts that hold the regulator.
Twist the regulator 90 degrees and fish it out.
Reverse the procedure to install. The only thing that is a bit confusing (but you can figure it out if you made it this far) is attaching the door cable to the door handle. Make sure the panel is able to open the door before you clip the panel back in place!
Thx for the instructions. One question i have is how exactly does the glass come out? From the looks of your images, the window looks like it's behind the regulator. So how can the window be removed without taking the regulator out first?
ReplyDeleteReply is a bit late, but may help others. Push the glass up from the bottom while tipping it forward at the top (away from the car if the door were closed). It gets a but tough at the end because the clips hang up on the rubber strips.

ReplyDeleteYou actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me. I’m looking forward to your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
